Support Hose for Women
Support hose for women, also known as compression stockings, are of
benefit to those with various medical conditions including diabetes, varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis
and general swelling of the legs and feet. They are also sometimes recommended by doctors as a
preventative measure for women who spend long periods on their feet, to improve circulation and blood flow.
As acceptance of this type of medical hosiery has grown, so too has the range and styles of support hose
available. We take a look at the options out there and
give you some tips for choosing the best support hose for your condition.
There are two types of support stockings, Gradient and
Anti-Embolism.
Gradient
Support Stockings are designed so that the compression level is
strongest at the foot and ankle and lessens gradually up towards the top of the hose. This type is
recommended for people prone to getting blood clots, edema and blood pooling in the feet and legs from long periods
of inactivity. They also may be recommended for diabetics and pregnant women who may be prone to excessive swelling
of the feet and ankles. More recently they also have applications in elite
sport.
Anti-Embolism Compression Stockings are also
known as TED (Thrombo Embolic Deterrent) hose. They are designed to deliver equal levels of compression
throughout the length of the hose and this specifically targets the lymphatic and venous systems of the leg.
Anti-embolism stockings work with the natural movement of the calf muscle to assist circulate blood and lymph fluid
throughout the legs.
Before you buy.
Compression
stockings come in different levels of compression and it is vital that you purchase the correct compression level
for your condition. Mild support will provide relief for sore feet and ankles and minor varicose veins. Moderate support may help reduce the risk
of blood clots in people with restricted movement. Firm support is often required post surgery to reduce
swelling. Very firm support treats severe circulation conditions and is available via prescription
only. Talk to your doctor about which level is suitable for your needs and if you are at all unsure,
start with the mild support.
Sizing.
Measure the
circumference of your ankle at the smallest part. Measure the circumference of your thigh, calf and hips at
the fullest part. Refer to the sizing chart of the individual product and if your measurements are between
sizes then choose the size that most closely fits your ankle measurement. Remember that support garments that
are too small will have a compression level above that shown on the package. Conversely, a compression
garment that is too big will be less effective in the areas that need support.
Styles.
Support legwear for women come in three styles; knee-high support socks, thigh-high
support stockings and compression pantyhose. If you only need the support in your lower legs then the support socks
should be sufficient. If you also need compression around or just above your knees then consider the
thigh-high support hose. For full support including your abdominal area then look for a pair
of compression pantyhose. If you are pregnant there is also a range of maternity support hose to choose
from. If you are purchasing thigh-high compression stockings look for a style that has a 'grip-top' that
will hold up without falling.
